Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi National Park. The hike was tough, the insects plentiful, but was amazing. We decided to go from Kigali as it was closer to Bwindi than Kampala, which involved a border crossing. Our guide Joseph was excellent guiding us through this, as well as dealing with all accommodation and even showed us around his local town’s (Kisoro) market. The food at the accommodation was excellent.

What You’ll Do
You will board a domestic Aerolink Uganda flight from Entebbe Airport scheduled for departure to Kasese/Mweya Airport, Queen Elizabeth National Park. There are three departures for the domestic flight: 7:00AM, 10:15AM & 12:00PM.
A Bamboo Ecotours representative will pick you up at the Kasese/Mweya airport and drive to the lodge. Check-in at the lodge and get ready for the afternoon activity.
Kazinga channel boat cruise (if time permits)
If time permits, join the Kazinga channel boat cruise for an afternoon of wild game viewing. You will spot crocodiles, buffaloes, elephants, and a wide range of bird species on the channel waters. After the Kazinga channel boat cruise, drive to Kibale National Park. The drive to Kibale National Park will go through the famous crater lakes of the Fort Portal region.
Kalinzu Forest Reserve Chimpanzee Trekking
After early morning breakfast, we will drive to the Kalinzu forest to experience trekking the chimpanzees in their forest home. If you are lucky on the trek, you might encounter other different species of monkeys in the Kalinzu forest. These include colobus monkeys, olive baboons, and red-tailed monkeys. After the chimp trek, drive to Bwindi National Park via the Ishaka-Kabale highway. The drive to Bwindi National Park will take about 5-6hrs.
After early morning breakfast, we will have a short drive to the Bwindi National Park gate to receive a gorilla-trekking briefing. The national park guide will conduct the presentation that covers the basics of what to expect during the gorilla trek and how to act to ensure the safety of both guests and the gorillas. Once you are assigned to a group, our adventure into the rainforest begins! Follow your guide through dense vegetation until you encounter these impressive creatures in their natural habitat. Depending on how far inside the forest the gorillas are, the trek can take from between 3 hours up to 8, but most last between 3 and 6 hours. After the gorilla trek, we will take you back to the lodge to enjoy a well-deserved dinner and an evening of relaxation.
On this day, we will drive from Bwindi National Park and head towards Lake Mburo National Park. There will be a stopover for lunch at the Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara city or take lunch at the lodge. After lunch, continue to Lake Mburo National Park. Check-in at the lodge and get some rest before the scheduled evening game drive. There is a provision to do the Lake Mburo boat trip to spot wildlife including giraffes, buffalos, topis, and Zebra. An evening game drive is also an option.
After early morning breakfast, enjoy a short game drive in Lake Mburo National Park. Continue with the drive to Kampala or Entebbe town. If your exit flight is on this day, continue directly to Entebbe International Airport in time for the departure flight. A short stopover is planned at the Equator crossing near Masaka town. This will be the end of the 5-day trek.

Despite the timing, Edison was able to secure a gorilla permit at Mgahinga as well as for chimps at Kibale (both magical of course). Four out of five lodgings were perfect – one can use some work (I understand they had recent management changes and Edison confirmed he will speak with them). The very best part of the experience, however, was the work ethic, knowledge, and overall pleasant nature of my guide, Herbert. He was an utter delight to work with and of the four or five guides I usually spend time with each year, he easily ranks as one of my favorite.
