There are three volcanoes located in Kisoro, southwestern Uganda, that hikers love. These are Mount Sabyinyo (the old man’s teeth in the local Rufumbira dialect), Mount Gahinga (a small pile of stones), and Mount Muhabura (the guide). Mount Sabyinyo is 3,645m high, Mount Muhabura is 4,127m, whereas Mount Gahinga is 3,474m. Mount Sabyinyo is the most favored by hikers because of its rugged peaks and provides a chance to step into three countries of Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC upon reaching the third peak.

Mount Muhabura
Mount Muhabura, also known as “the guide” in the local Rufumbira language, stands tall at 4,127 meters above sea level. It is the tallest of the three volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the third tallest of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga ranges. Mount Muhavura is popularly known for the crater on the top of the mountain.  Hikers can climb the volcano all year round.

Mount Gahinga
Mount Gahinga (a small pile of stones) is a favorite to many hikers due to its low altitude. Hiking Mount Gahinga takes you through the lush vegetation cover of Mgahinga National Park. The 5-7 hour hike goes through several vegetation zones, including the bamboo cover. Upon reaching the top, the cool air and the breeze from the giant lobelia in the creator swamp are so fulfilling.

Mount Sabyinyo
Mount Sabyinyo, or old man’s teeth, is one of the revered volcanoes in the chain of eight mountains that forms the Virunga ranges of Central and Eastern Africa. The third peak of this famous volcano adjoins Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It takes between 7 and 10 hrs to summit the Sabyinyo extinct volcano. Because of its rugged nature, there are several wooden ladders along the hiking trail.
