Kahuzi-Biega National Park Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking

Nyiragongo volcano overlooking Lake Kivu

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of the largest habitats for the endangered lowland gorillas. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kahuzi-Biega National Park, is located in the southern Kizu province, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The park is a few minutes drive from the nearby city of Bukavu.

Like the Virunga National Park, which is the location for mountain gorilla trekking in DRC, Kahuzi-Biega National Park has groups of habituated eastern low gorillas. Tours to visit the lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park can be arranged through local tour operators. A short gorilla trek to Kahuzi-Biega National Park takes at least 3-days with the pickup in Kigali, Rwanda on day one, eastern lowland gorilla trekking on day two, and returning to Kigali, Rwanda, via the Rusizi border entry.

For visitors planning to spend more time in the region, a trek to Kahuzi-Biega National Park can be combined with a golden monkey trekking safari in Rwanda, mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park (northern Kivu), and chimpanzee trekking at Nyungwe Forest National Park. A short visit to explore Lake Kivu and its fishing community can be arranged. Check this 10-Day Rwanda Golden Monkeys, Congo Gorillas & Nyiragongo Hike organized by Bamboo Ecotours. Tailor-made treks can also be arranged as needed. Contact Bamboo Ecotours for additional information if interested in visiting Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
