Cost of gorilla trekking permits in Uganda and Rwanda

Bamboo Ecotours tour guide, Godfrey Nkunda

Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda are always in high demand. It is advisable to start planning early and purchase your gorilla trekking permit before it is too late. The unprecedented interest for gorilla trekking permits in Uganda is partially due to a higher price tag of $1,500 per gorilla permit to see gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. This makes Uganda relatively cheaper since the gorilla trekking permit is still capped at $700 per permit as of July 2020. While the gorilla trekking experience is the same in both Rwanda and Uganda, it is evident that Uganda is less expensive to visit the gorillas.

Gorillas can be visited in two national parks in Uganda. Bwindi National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks have the same species of mountain gorillas. In terms of comparison, Bwindi has more gorillas families compared to Mgahinga gorilla national park with only one gorilla family. The trekking experience in both parks is the same except that there might be differences in the terrain and the amount spent hiking to reach the gorillas. The Bwindi national park landscape is very high compared to Mgahinga gorilla national park with gentle slopes of tropical forests.

Most travelers prefer visiting Bwindi National Park because of the historic nature of the park. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Bwindi national park is a habitat for more than half of the remaining mountain gorillas.
