In a memorandum issued on 15th March 2021, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has extended the discount on gorilla trekking permits through 30th June 2021. Initially published on 27th November 2021, the promotional prices for discounted gorilla trekking permits aim to revive the Uganda tourism sector that has been hugely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The reduced price for gorilla trekking permits implies that tourists visiting Uganda to trek gorillas can pay $400 for a gorilla permit instead of the regular $700. The chimpanzee trekking price in Kibale Forest National Park is still reduced from $200 to $150. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done at two national parks in southwestern Uganda; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The promotional package also comes with national park entrance fees reduced by 50%. The national park entrance fees discount applies to these parks; Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Mburo National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, and Semliki National Park.

The UWA memo also reduces visitation fees for East African nationals, including Ugandans and foreign residents in Uganda. During the promotional period through June 2021, East African Citizens will pay UGX 150,000 for gorilla trekking permits and UGX 100,000 for chimpanzee trekking permits in Kibale National Park. Similarly, Uganda’s foreign residents will pay USD300 for gorilla trekking permits and USD100 for chimpanzee trekking permits in Kibale National Park.

For people planning to travel to Uganda to trek the mountain gorillas, note that Uganda is currently open for tourism. All travelers into Uganda must have a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken within 120hrs and another test at exit also taken within 120hrs before exiting Entebbe Airport. The major private testing centre in Kampala is called Test and Fly, which realized Covid results between 6 and 24hrs. You can check the website for Test and Fly for details.
